Munich Opera Festival, Bavarian State Opera
Under Construction Zelt und Container / Tent architecture and container
Marstallplatz, D-80539 Munich
curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers
During this year’s Munich Opera Festival the Bavarian State Opera presents two exhibitions curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers :cargo manifest and cargo vision within the event series under construction in the container on Marstallplatz.
The exhibit cargo manifest features the work of 58 visual artists whose images of musical instruments have been arranged for the installation according to the musical perspectives of conductor Kent Nagano. His arrangement groups the “instruments” according to volume and follows his interpretation of Bruckners 4th symphony with the Bavarian State Orchestra, which can be heard over loudspeakers during the exhibition. cargo manifest brings together the different conceptions of space and time, – their coalescence creates a differentiation with surprising effects: The linear perception of the musical experience is juxtaposed with the spacial perception of the visual.
cargo vision presents a moving image works program with works by 10 international visual artists. All video and film works on view revolve around the opera, its dramaturgy, its formal devices and contents. For two days the container of the under construction-tent will become a freight case transporting forms of artistic expressions between the worlds of the opera and visual art. The works on view at cargo vision will primarily look at the broad spectrum of the opera’s visual elements and their relation to the libretto, to music and the stage production. Moreover, the opera is celebrated as a pompous feast for all senses. The container not only functions as a Black Box but is a reference to the travelling stage, and with its character of a tiny, transportable cinema it points towards the big difference between itself and the huge apparatus of the State Opera.
cargo manifest and
cargo vision are parts of the series of events called
under construction (from July 1st to 11th 2009). under construction completes this year’s Munich Opera Festival with a line-up of theoretical and performative events in a tent created especially for this purpose on Marstallplatz. Theatre activists, artists and experts from several fields will be brought together in order to discuss the opera’s basic modules – music, text, scene –, the architecture of its buildings and the visions behind it.: daily evening lounges as well as the exhibition cargo manifest and the moving image works program cargo vision in the container will look at the opera through the eyes of contemporary art and popular culture.
